COUPLES PSYCHIATRIC COUNSELLING
Couples psychiatric counselling is for people wanting to improve certain aspects of their relationship and, in some cases, exploring underlying psychological issues. It is counseling for couples who are in a relationship, married or not. It’s often referred to as marriage counseling. The goal is to improve the couples’ relationship, or sometimes to help them decide whether or not they should continue staying together. Although the focus is on the couple, there are times when the individual psychological issues of one or both parties need to be addressed.
COUNSELLING PROCESS
The procedures and techniques used within couples counselling include, but are not limited to:
– Gottman Method, or reinforcing positive aspects of the relationship.
– Solution-focused couples therapy, which identifies the couple’s goals and how to achieve them.
– Behavioral and cognitive behavioral therapy.
– Emotionally focused therapy helps identify feelings and how to deal with them.
– Psychoanalytic therapy explores how the relationship relates to childhood experiences.
